Keith Olbermann, in an MSNBC Special Comment, Oct. 18, 2006, regarding the signing of the Military Commissions Act:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15321167/

Read it, or better yet, if your bandwidth allows, view the video clip of him giving this speech.

Mr. Olbermann argues passionately that George W. Bush has removed a set of rights that make Americans American: constitutional habeas corpus (the right of those imprisoned by the federal government to be brought to court), and the provisions of the Geneva Convention (prohibiting torture). Possibly the best speech I've ever heard. Whether or not you agree, it's worth a listen/read.

Wow. I've come to respect Mr. Olberman, but I did not expect this from him. I, frankly, didn't expect to see this kind of courage from a mainstream journalist again in my lifetime. I'm a little bit proud, and a little bit terrified, all at once.

That's exactly how I feel about it. I think he went slightly over-the-top in how he presented the issue, but he did so in such a moving way, and on such an important topic, that I feel like it worked.

Has anyone thought of asking this guy to run for public office, I wonder? Or maybe his talents are better spent as a journalist.

I, for one, prefer to keep Olbermann in the fourth estate. He's an excellent watchdog.

I saw a speech that he gave after that whole Clinton thing went down a few weeks ago. I think you can find it on UTube. It's brilliant. America scares me now. It's too bad my boyfriend lives there and I'm probably going to go to school there. :( All this stuff scares the poop out of me. But I'm glad there's people like him that aren't afraid to speak their minds.
